Thomas Szasz, The Myth of Mental Illness :
This is a classic attack on the notion that there is any such thing as
'mental illness. Szasz is himself a psychiatrist, happens to believe
in 'people having problems' of an emotional, spiritual, psychological nature,
but not in the phony medical 'disease of the mind' explanation embraced
by orthodox psychiatry. Szasz, a right-wing libertarian, seems more concerned
with the role of 'mental illness' in excusing people for their actions
in the courtroom, but whether you are talking about blame-the-victim or
excuse-the-culprit, his logic is inescapable.
